Mrs. Smith's second grade class is the Excellent Eagles. We strive for excellence in all areas. This is a year of learning self-control. Students learn what Jesus calls excellent (1 Corinthians 12:31-13:6). Bible lessons are built around the character of the characters of the Bible. Through enjoyable lessons and colorful projects, children learn how they can have Godly characteristics. We memorize the books of the Bible and practice finding chapters and verses. Children are encouraged to spend time with God each day by reading their Bibles and praying. The children are told and shown constantly that they are valuable and precious to God and to their teacher.
This is the year when reading becomes fun. The class participates in the ongoing reading contest and spends time in class reading good books or listening to the teacher read. Students write paragraphs and stories, and around Christmas, we begin to learn cursive handwriting. In math we learn to tell time and temperature in greater detail, count money, add, subtract and multiply. We start by practicing addition and subtraction facts in order to "lock them in" and then toward spring, we move into multiplication by ten and then zero to five.
Heritage lessons cover the Colonial Period from the first settlers to the writing of the Constitution. Each child will become an expert on one major person of this period by reading stories, making a poster, and dressing the part for our Heritage Day in the spring. The preparation for Heritage Day is a parent-child-teacher project. Science covers fossils, systems of the body, and layers of the earth, to name a few. A butterfly unit is a favorite with the students. We will watch butterflies develop from larvae to pupae to adults, then we will release the butterflies. The whole room will look like a butterfly house and we will make models of the life cycle of the butterfly.
The biggest emphasis in second grade is the building of strong foundations especially in the Lord, in reading, and in math. Mrs. Smith expects each child to behave respectfully, to do his or her best and to show God's love to others. That's what being an Excellent Eagle is all about.
